Is your business mobile?

The way we access the internet and view websites has changed dramatically over the years with mobile phone usage increasing daily.  There have been many factors for this, more mobile friendly sites, smarter and faster phones, better connectivity and speeds. Searching and purchasing on the web using a mobile device has grown significantly over the past few years. Back in 1999, the BBC posted an article on their website saying that “experts predict that by 2003 there will be more consumers surfing the web on mobile phones than on computers”. Their predictions were a little off as it has taken until 2014 for the balance to shift with 68% of UK adults having used devices such as mobile phones, tablets or other hand held devices to access the Internet , and 87% of 16-24 year olds using their mobile devices to access the internet. The rise of 4G and better mobile internet speeds may have contributed to this increase in mobile internet usage and by 2020 it is predicted that around 53% of mobile connections in Europe will be using 4G. Mobile internet is going to keep getting faster. Ofcom has started the groundwork needed to set sail for the 5G communications future. When 5G arrives it is expected to be able to deliver 10 to 50Gbit/s. This represents a 3,000 fold increase in speeds according to the Financial Times. Ofcom says the average 4G customer in the UK today receives data at an average of 15Mbit/s. 5G is due to hit our future smart phones around 2020. So why should your business have a mobile optimised site? Research shows that 57% of mobile users will abandon your website if it takes more than 3 seconds to load and 30% will abandon a purchase transaction if the shopping cart isn’t optimised for mobile devices.
