Photography Combined with Illustration
In recent years, the boundaries between graphic design and illustration have become ever more blurred. This shows no sign of stopping in 2020, as brands including Nike, Adidas and Vogue have made use of an eye-catching combination of photographic imagery overlayed with stylised illustration.
Leonardo Da Vinci once said that “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”, and good designers know that the clearest message is often the most simple. With the increased crossover between design and illustration, 2020 has seen simplified illustration become more popular. Limited colours and uncomplicated keylines have decorated a multitude of materials so far this year.
An influx of design has made use of monochromatic imagery in the first six months of 2020. Photographs or detailed illustrative work has been seen represented in tones of just one colour, or simply in black and white. This has often been used alongside strong splashes of colour in the form of block typography or graphical shapes and elements.
3D Generated Design
Three dimensional generated content has been on the rise for the last decade or more. As computers and software become increasingly more powerful and accessible, 3D has become more noticeable within the graphic design industry. Brands from Pepsi to DHL and many more in-between have all made use of this genre in 2020, and it’s continually evolving along with the hardware and software used to create it.
The use of realistic metallic effects has been on the rise for a number of years, but 2020 has seen a surge in the trend, particularly in the form of gold. Although often used to advertise luxury brands, it is not exclusive to this area, and creative designers have used the effect in typography, web design, print and more.
Predictions for the next six months in graphic design include a wide range of techniques, styles and ideas. Some believe that cyberpunk colour schemes, made up of hot pinks, cool cyans and moody dark blues will continue to grow in popularity. Others think that street art styles (already popular in 2019) will evolve and grow in 2020. Paper cut-out and collage is another technique that is predicted to become more prevalent this year, and we may see a resurgence of vintage style logos and materials, as forecast by others.
